Mind Is Rooted In Being, May 12, 2024

David: One of the things I thought I’d mention today, which occurred to me as I was driving here, that the only real strength in the mind, when we talk about the mind’s strength, having a strong mind, is in its absorption in Being. That’s its strength. So, strength in this case is an attribute of Being. It’s a quality of Being and not a property of the mind itself.

In other words, its strength comes from the degree to which it has absorbed in the Being that transcends it, that exists just in back of it, at the root of the mind. It gains solidity in that environment, where it is open to Being. The mind is open to Being, not shut down and turned away in its own momentum, where the will exists, a forceful kind of individuality exists, the illusion of separateness exists. Those ideas or notions come from a mind that is not absorbed in Being.

And what does it mean for the mind to become absorbed in Being? It means it loses itself, its private reality. Or, you could say it transcends itself and finds its core reality in Being. Not within itself, not inside of its own functioning, where the mind can get caught in the show of perception, in experience, which is not to say that what I’m talking about is the mind resisting experience. That I am not saying.

Thus, when the mind is absorbed in its source, it’s like a tree absorbed with its full weight in the trunk, in this huge trunk that holds it, that holds and supports the whole thing. And below the trunk, of course, are the roots, which you don’t see. So, that trunk is like a single resolute intellect dwelling on that which is prior to it, the root of the mind, the root of Consciousness itself, the root of knowing itself. We’re doing this now, what I’m talking about. I’m not talking about this. I’m talking inside of this with you in the hope that we can share this happening.

The mind has very little strength outside of Being. Even though from an egocentric point of view it might be just the opposite, where motivational therapists will tell you try harder, think differently, act positively. All appealing to the desperation in the mind to do something on its own terms, based on its own stated goals, which are often fantasies provided by the culture, uninspected fantasies which are provided by the culture wholesale.

And so people buy them because they’re at a good price. They’re at a discount price. Even though there’s no real commerce going on in the way that we think of it with money, but there’s a wholesale, uninspected purchase of ideas and concepts, and even the feelings then that are triggered by those concepts, and that’s the customary reality. That’s the ordinary reality, that’s the waking state reality that people casually adopt in order to get by in life as smoothly as possible.

But such a life holds no hope for ecstasy and the self-transcending Bliss-union with the Absolute reality. There’s no chance of such a happening in a life that is confined to its own mental content. And that’s where the invitation to liberation has significance, to invite the mind into a whole different kind of relationship with what it is rooted in, maybe even having a relationship with that for the first time. Or, if one is acquainted with that field of Consciousness, then learning how to operate in it with Grace, honesty, integrity, generosity, kindness, intelligence, awareness, all of these qualities and more, compassion. None of the qualities I just stated is automatically guaranteed by merely bringing the mind to the Absolute and rooting it there. The qualities that I mentioned, all those qualities I just enumerated, are not guaranteed. They have to do with further development of the emotional, mental, and psychic character of the human being, inside of that openness now that has been generated.

So, there’s a kind of work to do, and I don’t mean that in a negative sense. Nor do I mean it in the sense in which work can become exhaustive. It’s a passionate engagement with the entire intelligence of the human being, which is not just functional but transcendental, meaning it exists beyond action and the need for action. And therefore, such a life is always reassessing and spontaneously activating the intelligence necessary to live in that kind of enlightened existence.

Participant 1: I have a question.

David: Yes, please.

P1: So, this outer reality,

David: The outer reality, which is the reality of the waking state, go ahead.

P1: I’m finding this place of being, and then just responding to what comes, is a way to stay in that state of peace and allowing kind of Cosmic Consciousness to unfold.

David: Good.

P1: And I’m just wondering if you have insights on how to do that more.

David: Not outside of what I’m sharing with you now. If you look at my bank account on advice, it’s been overdrawn, which means I realize that advising people doesn’t work. I never tell anybody what to do, because people really don’t want advice. They want an immediate change inside their being, an immediate change in their heart, and even then, based on the person, that change may or may not be appreciated or welcomed.

But what you just stated reveals that you are willing to work inside of that state to learn more about it, that you want to learn and deepen and become ever more graceful in that functioning in which, your phrase, Cosmic Consciousness dominates, rather than an egoic model. Good, we’ll consider that now. We’ll consider that. Let’s go into this nice, lovingly together, so we can feel ourselves sinking into the subject matter. We’re going to feel our way into Being. In other words, we’re not going to use a method. A method is always an imposition. It’s always due to effort, and a striving towards some stated or unstated ideal, some goal, which means you’re using force. We rule that out completely here. We won’t do that, because that’s what the whole world is doing, and if you look at the world, it’s not doing so well on many levels, on many, many levels.

We’re not talking about the Absolute level that never gets affected by anything. I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the relative level where people show signs of happiness, integration, Bliss, a surplus of love, tolerance. That’s still lacking in the world, in many cases. Not in every case, but in many cases. As long as war exists, this thing hasn’t happened yet. That’s how I see it. As long as we see wars and unnecessary violence, horrific violence, we haven’t yet understood. So, I’ll use that as my marker. And I can say the same thing about poverty. I could say the same thing about education, health. As long as we don’t know how to take care of ourselves and each other as a species, we’ll never get to this place that you want to get, because your own life might have some enlightened value, no doubt, that you can bring something into this picture on the level on which you function as a person, but if you want to see real change, it’s got to become more expanded than just a few individuals. You’ve got to really start operating in that space of total freedom, and then also find compassion in that freedom.

There’s no use being enlightened if you have no compassion, and there are such beings, believe it or not. I’m telling you there’s a lot of development that goes on after the initial phase of awakening that has to do with educating the heart, educating the heart consciousness. Are we together on this so far? Does this make sense? Any other questions or concerns? Just feel what’s happening energetically in this room now. I’m pointing you there just to see if you can consciously connect to the transformation that’s going on now in the atmosphere. For that, you have to have kind of a very surrendered mind. Your mind has to be surrendered, docile, quiet, and immediately you pick up on this other frequency, this other energy.

Participant 2: I’ve been experiencing sitting here, just such a profound feeling of love that seems to be quite rare, like I don’t often experience that any other place. And what I notice is that it just allows me to soften and just completely, just like let everything go, and just be rejuvenated by that, like you were explaining, like the Being-ness. And, ya, it just feels really good to receive, and I was just reflecting on how uncommon that feeling is.

You know, like being around most people, there’s always like a need to present in a certain way, or to defend yourself, or you don’t know how, if you let down your guard, how you’re going to be treated. And being in your presence, I just feel completely relaxed to just let everything go, and it feels really supportive and healing.

David: Everything is gone. You’re right.

P2: Yeah, it’s like someone was saying to me recently, I really like this, that there’s no such thing as unconditional love. It’s either love or it’s conditions. And I feel that love here that has no conditions. That’s something I’ve always received.
